Cutting my punk's hair is akin to bathing an alley cat with one hand tied behind your back. There is much thrashing about and even more ear splitting wails about the unfairness of it all. However, he is in desperate need of a haircut, and he HATES HATES HATES going to the hairdresser. He's been begging me to cut it myself, and like a moron I thought, of course! I can totally cut his hair on my own, how hard can it be? His really thick, somewhat unruly, double cow lick sporting hair. Did I mention how much he hates going to the hairdresser? Heh.
I did it. I went to good old Walmart and bought a nice set of clippers (why not get the nice ones, right...I'm sure I'll be really good at this!) and brought them home to start the clippin'. My home is now covered in enough microscopic scratchy hair pieces to knit a 8x11' HAIR CARPET. Argh! Keep your fingers crossed that the haircut came out okay...I wouldn't know since he fell asleep immediately after his life-threatening trim and currently all of his hair is sticking straight up on his pillow. Yikes.
udated: Yeah...turns out I'm not real good at cutting hair. Back to the drawing board...

Haircut!
Oh my goodness...I brought the kid in for haircut today and it was priceless. Let me just start by saying that we do not ever enjoy ourselves when we go to get Luke's hair cut. The whole process (up until today) always involved lots of crying, and snot, and tears, and hysterics about how he never wanted a haircut in the first place. Did I mention the wailing...'cause there's always plenty of that, too. I don't normally tell him we're going until we pull into the driveway, since I don't possess enough patience to hear him tell me all the reasons he can't go if I tell him any sooner than that. But not today, folks!
Today, he is a Grown Boy, and haircuts are something magical, and they involve Sponge Bob Videos! And good manners! And lollipops! And a balloon! They took the clippers to my boy for the first time ever today. (I got a serious knot in my stomach as I watched the inches drop off his head.) His hair was long and straight and thick...rinsing the soap out is no small task and also involves lots of tears and wailing, although he never wants to get of the tub once the dreaded hair washing is done, of course.
Today, he is the proud wearer of a super short cut with some spiking on the top...since that's how all the cool kids do it. And as much as I would love to post a picture, I won't. I want to take it with the new camera...and Mr. FedEx hasn't dropped it off yet. It seems no amount of sitting on my porch steps willing him to come makes any difference on how fast my camera gets delivered.
Bummer.

I Think the Internet is Broken...Or Maybe It's Just That Google Hates Me...
I want to take Lucas in for a haircut on Wednesday in preparation for the big #4 birthday...but whenever I try to find hairstyles online for boys, I just get pages full of a million links to other sites, and when I follow any of those links my computer starts to smoke and the screen melts...or maybe I just get more garbage pages full of useless info and no pictures. I want him to have a nice haircut and I am quite useless with a pair of scissors, so trying to do it myself is sort of out of the question unless I want all his party guests making fun of him for looking like...well...like his mother cuts his hair.
He has these charming double cowlicks at the back of his head and they swirl in opposite directions, so when I tell the ladies at his kid's salon to kind of cut it shorter in the front but a little bit longer around the cowlicks they snip his rather large melon into a toddler mullet...and that my friends, will never do for a young man on the brink of four. If anyone has any suggestions or links to kid's cuts...please let me know!

Like A Regular Haircut, Only Louder
My boy got his hair cut again yesterday, and he looks so handsome and grown up, and I nearly broke a sweat. It went a little something like this: Total wreck of a boy...then perfectly happy to be there...then total wreck of a boy. I mean, come on! It's just a haircut! Why all the drama? The crying and the screaming and the waaaaailing. I felt like the main act on the center stage of a three ring circus prancing around, trying to offer distractions...Look at me! Squealing with happiness over what a BIG BOY you are! And how FUN it is to get your hair cut! How about a LOLLIPOP?! Look at BOB the BUILDER on t.v.! Pretend to CATCH me in your red jeep! We can go to a PLAYGROUND when you're done! OH LOOK...something SHINY!
Oh. My. Goodness. Luckily, there was only one other mother who brought her poor unsuspecting toddler in while my child was in his fit of despair...and I'm not gonna lie...the kid looked scared. Sorry Other Mother.
The kicker is, I feel so guilty about the scene we always cause, that I give the lady a big fat tip, making his toddler haircut twice as expensive, luckily for me, we also only go half as often...so I guess it all works out.

Once in a While, He Throws Me a Bone
My boy was so good today!
I wanted...no I needed...to get my hair cut, and that's something I just always put off, because it's not really a necessary expense. Not that I have any problems blowing money on plastic trains or Matchbox cars, but...you know...those things aren't for me. Lucas has a bit of an aversion to the hairdressers, so I didn't tell him we were going until this morning, because if I had told him, say, yesterday, it's all I would have heard about until today anyway, so I save myself the trouble. He was not having it. The whining started, and then the wailing until I spoke loud enough for him to hear that we weren't going there for him, but for me. And that, my friends, made all the difference.
When we pulled into the parking lot of my very favorite hairdresser in the whole wide world, he started getting nervous, and I explained to him one more time that I was getting my haircut, and that I LOVE LOVE LOVE to get my haircut, and I was EXCITED to be there. He walked around the car to hug my leg and gazed up at me so sweetly and said, "Mommy, I'm so proud of you!" and trotted right in the salon...where he was a perfect angel while I got my hair cut. Forty-five minutes of peace and quiet in the chair with a lovely little shoulder massage and a fantastic cut...I feel like a new person.

Priceless...
Cost of one Thomas the train bribe that was supposed to be a gift from the Easter Bunny.....12.00
Actually managing to get Lucas to sit through a haircut.....PRICELESS!
