If You're Riding in the Car With Me...

and you hear a funny noise every time we approach a red light, it could be Lucas blowing on the traffic light to make it turn green. As I drive along these days, and come upon a red light, I can hear a little "ppppfffhhhhhh" coming from the back seat. After a few red lights in a row, he tells me he's too tired to do anymore, and we'll just have to wait for it to turn on it's own.

I, of course, appreciate any lights can he turn green. He does get furious when I turn right on red.

Feeling Hot Hot Hot!

It's finally summer! We spent the first part of the morning cleaning out Luke's swimming pool, and the second part filling it back up. But it was worth it! It had all of 4 inches of water in it, but he wouldn't take off the green floaty because it was helping him "wim"...what a beautiful day.

Oh I Still Wish My Camera Had Batteries...

and a future, adult Lucas will be so glad that it doesn't. He looked so grown up today reading a book on the potty...legs swinging...concentration furrowing his little brow. hehehehehehe. I have got to get the jumbo pack of AAs the next time we go to Costco. Images like that are meant to be kept for all time.

Curse The Dead Battery!

Oh. My. Goodness.

I took Lucas for his first dentist appointment on Friday. Really just a meet and great with the dentist-get a free toothbrush-pick a toy from the prize box sort of appointment. We arrived the appropriate 10 minutes prior to the appointment to fill out necessary paperwork. They waited an inappropriate 35 minutes to bring us back. Ahem. I did mention that he was three and it was his first appointment and he was nervous? Not a great start, but still, we were doing OK. I had prepped him for days before about what would happen at the dentist, he is not a child who enjoys surprises of this nature. We play acted me being the dentist, and him being the patient. So, when the dental hygienist called his name and brought us back, he looked a little scared, but he followed her anyway. The tears and the runny nose and the wailing "only my Mommy can brush my teeth" didn't start until the dentist came in. But, as much as he didn't want to be there, he never moved from the chair and he kept his mouth open wide, I tried really hard not to laugh...cause it was funny! I wanted to take a picture of this day, to document his first steps into a future of good oral hygiene...and my camera battery died on me! Right there! I was so mad...I considered asking them to let me get a new battery and bring him back and take his picture. But then I snapped back to reality (what was I thinking!?) and helped him to the door. Because of the big scene he made, the hygienist gave him a real Matchbox car instead of making him pick a prize from the junk box, I mean the prize box.

He left that office clutching his new car, and on the way to mine, he looked up at me with a big smile and a runny nose and said "Well, that was fun!" What?!?

"I'm 'Wimming!"

It turns out my son is a fish...in a my whole life was meant to be spent in the water kind of way. We went to my friend's house today to swim in her pool. Last year my son wouldn't go near the end of the deck leading up to the crystal clear water. Today he raced head first in and learned "wim". I kept coaching him that the word was s-w-i-m-m-i-n-g....and he repeated right back, "ssssssssss-wimming!" By the end he kept telling me to "LET GO!" I just couldn't knowing, of course, that he would sink like a stone. But that bravery! That excitement to be in the water! That's my boy!

Argh!

Can I just take a moment to complain about the latest toy recall? How on earth does a toy company manage to market and sell 1.5 million wooden Thomas trains covered in lead paint? Would it surprise you to know that we own every single train and accessory (some in multiple) on that list except the Smelting Yard? Can you imagine what it will cost to ship it all back for replacement pieces? Grrrr....

Anyway, we have a big week coming up...my days off are already loaded with commitments...some fun, some not so fun...I think by Saturday I should be exhausted, just in time for my work week to start again. The weather looks like it will be sunny throughout the week, though, and my plan to keep us busy and outside this summer has been working beautifully. If all goes well, we'll be taking a train ride soon, a trip to Shelburne Farms to feed the animals and milk the cows, a camping trip on Burton Island with some lovely friends of ours, a first trip to the dentist for Lucas...the list goes on and on. All of it a definite improvement over last years' stay-in-the-house-and-sleep-on-the-couch-all-day!

Keep your fingers crossed about Luke going to the dentist. Never in my life have I made a trip to the dentist sound like so much fun as I have over the past couple of weeks prepping him for the appointment and praying he doesn't flip out when a strange man tries to put his fingers in his mouth!

Quote of the Day

"Mommy, I'm using my brain!" (While playing his new Dora the Exployer Memory Card game)

Also, practicing hard to be a full grown man by taking a nap in his recliner...all that's missing is the remote!

I Wish I Had a Picture

of Lucas driving the ferry boat on Friday. We went up to the Grand Isle Fish Hatchery to see and feed the fishes, then a picnic lunch outside on the grounds, then a ferry ride to Plattsburgh and back which we loved! Lucas wanted to ride back to the Plattsburgh side when our round trip was complete...but I told him two trips to New York in one day was one trip too many! We got ice creams on the Vermont side when our ride was done...Lucas ate his so fast it didn't have time to melt, even in the 85 degree weather, mine however fell off the cone on the way to the car...but since no one was looking I just put it right back on the cone and picked off the grass! It was maple walnut...you just don't give up so easily on maple walnut, you know?

Good News!

Our Property Manager has reduced the toilet fine to the low, low price of just $155.00! Yippee!

I wonder what I'll do with all that extra money! OH! That's right, I never really budgeted for a whole new toilet to begin with...right.

It's Awful to be Misunderstood...

Whenever Lucas takes a digger and wipes out I always tell him to "jump up and shake it off". As long as I don't see blood I don't give him any alarming reaction, just kisses, and he always jumps up and literally makes the motions of dusting himself off with a little shake. Today he was playing with an older boy in the neighborhood when he took a spill on the gravel. He jumped right up and yelled "I'm shakin' it off!" The boy thought that he was saying "shut up" and starting yelling at him. My poor kid threw his head back and started to cry..."but I'm just shakin' it off...." It must be rotten to be so misunderstood, especially after just wiping out on gravel! I came to his rescue of course, and ice pops cure every ailment under the sun, so thank heavens we're always stocked up on those.

Quote of the Day

We have a few from the last week...

Today: "My toe is broken, can you get me a new one?" (Recovering from a mosquito bite on his pinkie toe, to which he is highly allergic)

Yesterday: "I'm gonna need a red light soon." (While driving in the car, I always tell him he needs to wait until we get to a red light before I can give him my attention...so he has taken to requesting red lights and/or stop signs when he needs something.)

Thursday: "You broke my heart!" (When I scolded him to stay with me while shopping in Kmart.)

We Caught a Whopper!

It was "Free Fishing Day" in Vermont...no permit needed, so we took advantage of the beautiful day and went to Gilbrook Pond.

I know this A LOT of pictures...but a picture is worth a thousand words, as they say!

We're Goin' Fishin'

Lucas has a Lightening Mcqueen fishing pole and Saturday is a "Free Fishing Day" here in the Green Mountain State. Keep your fingers crossed that we don't catch anything, because I am not looking forward to wrestling a fish off of a hook if we do!

Rotten Kids

Some kids are so rotten...not any of yours, of course...I'm talking about those brats at the playground who are the same age (and older) as my son but seem like such little jerks. The ones that tell your kid (who is just so excited to see all those children running around) "Don't play with me" in that bratty little voice. Or the ones that try and sneak in a push or shove when they think their mother isn't looking. But I'm looking, you bratty little kids...and I don't mind telling your parents that you're rotten...

Having said that...we did find the best park recently, and we've been going several times a week. They have the best picnic area, and tons of toddler friendly climbing structures, and somewhat clean public restrooms...I think Lucas and I will be spending a good chunk of summer there. We usually go with a buddy of his and they play together beautifully. Lucas loves to be chased and his buddy loves to chase him, they are a match made in heaven.

Also, I got to see my own buddy ROCK OUT at the Moms That Rock benefit concert last night. Awesome job Pam, I never could have done that, myself, I simply don't have it in me!

Note to Self

It is not worth paying half as much for beach toys at the X-Mas Tree Shop if they all fall apart while you're taking them out of the package. Of course, it's nothing a little super-glue won't fix!

Quote of the Day

Picture Lucas in his brand new pool on the back deck, filled with a whooping two inches of water (which took forever to fill even that teeny little amount)...flooping himself into the "waves"...

"Help, help, I'm sinkin' like a stone! Hahahahahahaha!"

He was just cracking himself up with that little number...over and over and over again!

Where on earth does he learn this stuff?
